Combat is a unique skill in that it is actually composed of three other "sub" skills: Attack, Strength, and Defense. The "Combat Level" is calculated as an average of the levels of the three sub-skills. So, for example, if with an Attack Level of 32, a Strength level of 29, and a Defense Level of 38, the Combat Level would be calculated as 33.
The other unique part of Combat is that it in no way requires the leveling of other skills in order to make general progression; however, some special combat areas can only be entered by using items from other skills, and equipping pieces of combat gear from other skills can improve your stats enough to make combat much easier to progress in.
Sub-Skills[]
Attack[]
The Attack sub-skill is simply the games version of an accuracy stat. Your Attack level therefore improves your chance of hitting any given target. The formula displayed within the game for hit chance based on attack level is as follows:
X = {Attack Level} - {Enemy Defense Level} Hit Chance = 50 + (0.75 * {X})
Strength[]
The Strength sub-skill operates just like its namesake in that it determines how much damage you can deal to an enemy. Leveling your Strength only ever effects the max damage you can do; therefore, the minimum damage will always be one (or zero if the attack misses). The formula displayed within the game for damage based on strength level is as follows:
Max Hit = 1 + ({Strength Level} / 3)
Defense[]
The Defense sub-skill is simply the games version of an evasion stat. Your Defense level therefore improves your chance of avoiding any given enemy attack. The formula displayed within the game for avoid chance based on defense level is as follows:
X = {Defense Level} - {Enemy Attack Level} Avoid Chance = 50 + (0.75 * {X})
Critical Strike[]
Every successful attack has chance to be a critical strike. The base chance is 10%. Can be raised by:
- Skookum Swings in 3rd tree of Teachings: 5 * 1% = 5%
- Enchant equipment (Helm +2%, Body +2%, Legs +2%) = 6%
- Legacy benefit Telegraph +50%
Tome of Water makes every successful hit critical.
Locations[]
There are several main locations in which no special items are necessary for entry; but equipped gear can improve stats and therefore improve chances of survival. These areas are where you can collect the majority of enemy drops and journal quest items. Aside from the main locations, there are a few special locations that allow for different encounters based on either access to specific itmes or simply a particular time of day.
